The breathtaking views - Snow capped mountains during the winter and even durinf summer the surroundings are very picturesque The vibrancy of the town - Hive of tourist activity which creates a great vibe Excellent dining . Small town yet many choices of cuisines, most of what we went to with extremely delicious food that we would not hesitate to have again A good base for travelling to other parts of South Island
It's a gorgeous little town, at the edge of South Island. If u r coming from north island in a ferry, Picton seems like the Monaco of New Zealand. With yatchs parked as far as you can see. For dinner, go to Cafe Cortado and try the Lamb shank, with some local brews.
Queenstown is a tourist dependent town. It pays to shop around a bit for places to eat. With all tourist type towns anywhere in the world, they dependent upon getting their hands in your wallet. The cheese and wine places on the edge of town deal in silly money and depend upon the mug of the month dropping $70 for some cheese and wine that a similar product in the supermarket is $15. The views are magnificent. Roads on the South Island make getting here difficult .
+ It seems that people in Invercargill are much friendlier than the rest from South Island. - Parking for free in the city is impossible, but it's quite common in bigger cities.
Queenstown may be the most scenic spot in New Zealand. It is the adventure centre in the South Island, any single adventure sport you can imagine can be done there, it depends only on your will and your physical abilities.
Christchurch was our entry point to a 2 week tour of the South Island. We were only there 2 nights and should have taken another day to explore more. We loved The Sunday Market...a nice mix of food carts, crafts and “stuff” Victoria Street was a nice place for upscale shopping and lunch with a nice band playing. We also drove through the tunnel and saw some spectacular views! Would have liked to have spent more time exploring that area.
Bear in mind we had miserable weather as a cyclone bore down on the South Island, but Methven didn’t shine as a destination for us. We did have a nice lunch at a little cafe across from a grocery store—I think it was called Primo Cafe. The iSite staff was approachable, but not as welcoming as we encountered elsewhere. We were misinformed as to which restaurants were serving lunch, and her directions to a post box led me to nothing I could identify as a place to mail my letters. I gather it is a ski destination, or very scenic in the fall. I would visit our B&B again as a lovely place to stay, but would have to find local activities before arriving if I came again. Our plans had been to spend time outdoors, and the weather spoiled that. The town was quiet. Parking was very easy.
Picton is a great little town situated in the heart of some of the most spectacular scenery on the South Island with heaps of outdoor adventures right there too. We love Picton.
Owaka is truly a small town. However, it’d make a great base to explore the areas around Dunedin and southern locations for nature, such as, waterfalls, hiking, Caves, Sea lions, penguins, etc. It is along the Southern Scenic Route that you truly should not miss. Also, It has a wonderful restaurant called the Lumber Jack. The outside does not do it justice. Just the woodwork alone is worth a trip inside. Although the dinner is a little pricey, the food was some of the best we had in all New Zealand, both North and South Islands. I had the Lamb roast and I never had better. My husband loved the Battered Blue Cod and my daughter loved the pan fried blue cod. Memorable!
The South Island of New Zealand is a truly a magical destination for an amazing adventure! Christchurch City is small and quaint with nice shopping areas. Remember it is in a major rebuilding phase from the big earthquake 7-8 years ago. The parks and museums are very nice. But the best part of New Zealand is to get out and drive. The scenery is awesome!
Te Anau
Kerrie was extremely helpful and booked the most wonderful day trips to Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound for us prior to our arrival. This extra service meant we were collected at the door and didn’t have to endure the long drive to Milford and stopped at all the scenic views along the way. Everything in the room was quality and beautifully decorated. This was definitely the best motel that we stayed in during our three weeks travelling in the South Island of New Zealand. Brian and Julie Australia
PERFECT! I have to say that Clearbrook is the best stay amongst the 7 other motels i had stayed in during my 15 days of travelling in South Island. We had 4 adults and 1 infant, and we were given the duplex apartment. The apartment came with an ensuite washer, dryer, and even a dishwasher! The entire apartment was well maintained and super clean. The location is also incredible, just a short 2mins walk to the town shopping area. We had an incredible stay. Will highly recommend!
The location is slightly out of the main boundary of the city centre (towards north direction), and it takes a 10 minute walk. Breakfast is buffet style with limited choice. Staff very friendly and helpful. Modern hotel (seems rather newly constructed), so it is nice. Room is reasonable size but bathroom a bit small. We stayed here two nights before setting out to explore the South Island driving. Taxi to the hotel ~ $50; Uber would be cheaper at ~ $30-$35
Christchurch
We loved the whole place. Greg and Sue made us feel so welcome with their relaxed yet attentive style of hospitality. Our accommodation was so homely and perfect for our first night ever in New Zealand. The icing on the cake was Greg driving us, free, the following morning to the location nearby where we collected our campervan for our two week driving tour of South Island. A fabulous start to our New Zealand experience. Thank you.
Liked the atmosphere, friendly staff and the meals were fantastic, great beverage selection. Awesome place to unwind and relax when traveling around the South Island whether inside or outside by the fire which was my favorite place to have a drink or two Okay it was several 😀 but besides that it has become a favorite place of ours to stay and it was only for a night will definitely return thank you Cardrona Hotel.
Fox Glacier
The Lodge is very quaint and set in a quiet lane. Very good rooms with a wooden theme decord. The Breakfast was very nice. The Owners were very helpful. We were 3 cyclists from India riding across South Island. Due to some bike problems, We were late in our riding schedule. So on our request, The hotel even refunded a prepaid room stay as we had to check out 1 day earlier. Highly recommended. Rgds.
Picton
Picton is very nice, a ferry port between the New Zealand North and South islands. The gateway to the South Island. It was a panic booking due to other factors but by chance the apartment was free. Really would have liked to stay and have use of it for longer but life makes it's own design, it's own route like driving on a motorway without turnoffs!
Picton
Apartment with the most amazing views over the marina. Exceptionally well kitted out with everything you could need for eating in. Lots of glass to take advantage of the views. Fabulous place to start the South Island phase of our travels. A bonus when we got off the ferry to find we were 100m from our accommodation
Kaikoura
Where to start! We loved this property, the best we’ve stayed in on our 3 month trip around both the north and south islands of New Zealand. We loved the space, the views, the access to the town and all the activities it has to offer. We would definely recommend this place for couples, friends, or families.
Greymouth
Out of 14 accommodations on our holiday in North and South islands of New Zealand, this was probably the best we stayed in. The host was magnificent and the quality (and quantity) of the inclusive breakfast as we stayed in the lodge was exceptional. The room was big, well equipped and comfortable.
Cromwell
It was such a happy time to have a kind host, dogs who like people, and people who love this space together. Accommodation was kept clean every day and was the best accommodation I personally experienced on the South Island. If I come to New Zealand next time, I will definitely visit again.
It was just about perfect ! We had an ocean front room on the top floor with a balcony...watched a beautiful sunset and listened to big sea waves on the beach A great situation with beach walking and lovely staff.. Thank you to them for our best stay in New Zealand's South Island
Hotel is not in the centre of Queenstown but there is a walkway over the road that leads directly into queenstown which we quite liked. Rooms were beautiful, very comfortable and we had a lovely 4 night stay at the end of 2 very busy weeks touring North and South island.
Arrowtown
The town of Arrowtown New Zealand is a must on anyone's holiday list in the South Island. The Arrowfield apartments are the perfect place to stay. Lovely self contained comfortable accommodation with all modern cons. Perfectly located and quiet.
Rangiora
Friendly staff. And, I know it seems a simple request they had decent coffee sachets. previous stays around south Island had crap coffee. Breakfast was excellent in quality and value. Hotel next door had great meals.
Haast
Very beautiful spot on West coast of South Island. Beaches were deserted and fantastic. Nightime skies a treat with star gazing. Hotel owner was gracious and helpful. Room was good, quiet, clean.
Kaikoura
Cleanliness, friendliness of owners and where it was situated and value for money. We will stay here next time we come to the south island of New Zealand.
Wanaka
Best surprise while traveling east coast of the South Island. Beautiful well equipped apartment with a great view from a large balcony. Definitely a 10
Loved the spacious apartments and so clean. Family played football on lovely lawn. Excellent place! Our favourite of our entire South Island trip!
This hotel had a lot of facilities and was a highlight of our road trip across the South Island. Bed was comfy and shower was above average.
