I love the proximity to the beach and town. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming as they have been in previous stays. The room was exceptionally clean if somewhat dated. No luxuries but a definite win on price and value. Highly recommended if you want to be right on the beach and near everything. I never rent a car as anything you need is within walking distance.

The beach in town smells bad and can be crowded. The beaches further away are quiet and cleaner. Cocles was perfect. Little tide pools across from the Jaguar Rescue Center too. Absolutely must visit the rescue center and Tasty Waves

The fresh food was stupendous.
The fresh food was stupendous. Our favorite restaurant was called "Como en mi Casa". The beaches were gorgeous. With guides, you see many sloths and monkeys. People are all very nice. I loved the Jaguar Rescue Center. They took in so many kinds of animals and they strive to rehabilitate them and return them to the wild. They were amazing.
Driving through the main part of town was VERY challenging. Sometimes, folks would just park in the street on a two lane street where there was only one lane for each direction of traffic. Scooters would dart around you from all directions and obeyed no traffic laws. There would be people walking everywhere and sometimes someone in your lane of traffic was pushing a banana cart.
It was hot and no restaurants had air conditioning and very few fans.
For these reasons, I would never want to go back. The difficulties were more challenging than what was offered.

It has a very laid-back, beachy vibe… There are lots of different places to eat with a big variety of choices, and numerous beaches and activities, and several markets, as well as roadside fruit stands to purchase food from.

A true jungle experience in a calm secure, laidback and amazing environment! Amazing little restaurants, beautiful beaches ! Much prefer this Caribbean Coast than the Pacific. Just rent a bike to move around or take a Tuktuk. Fruit markets on the roadsides!

Clearly a place for a younger crowd than us 70+ year olds but that didn't get in the way for us. Always treated well. Great to have such an international mix of people. Great food options, again with a mix of cuisines. With modest efforts you can arrange individualized itineraries for the sights. Infrastructure (local transportation, streets/roads, sidewalks) could benefit from updating - always a challenge in crowded, somewhat remote areas.

Charming Caribbean town, friendly
Charming Caribbean town, friendly
people, fun restaurant and entertainment options However, all gringo eateries are vastly overpriced. Avoid all the fancy places, totally not worth it. Exorbitant prices for nothing special. Opt for the few, but better, luncheonettes instead. Beer, not wine.
Loved Riquisimo! Be aware that different taxis charge different rates for the same trip, because they can haha! Chill! ;-)
Very friendly and helpful staff.
A lot of activities in the hotel itself, so there should be something for every one: two pools (one on the beach with music & bar, one quiet one for relaxing), a billiard table, dance classes, cooking classes, live music.
Great location, there were a lot of activities we could do in close proximity: visiting the town of Puerto Viejo, animal sanctuaries and rescue centers, BriBri waterfalls.
Tasty breakfast.
Sloths came to the hotel territory almost every day, which was very cute.
Not worth the money what they are asking for a night. It is definitely not a 4 or 5 star hotel. I stayed one week. The best about this place is the beach Playa Negra which is just few steps away. Food in the restaurant wasn't even mediocre. You can easily find truly luxurious hotels with the same money in Puerto Viajo. I didn't notice what the gay friendliness meant, waiters were all as robots as one can be. There are, you know, a difference asking How are you and How are you.
the property is simply stunning and the restaurant served my favourite food of my 3 week long trip (the waiters and waitresses were lovely too). There was wildlife all around (sloths, monkeys, bats, birds etc) and the pool was lovely. The hotel backs onto the best beach in Peurto Viejo (in my opinion) and I really can’t fault the place, other than that we are aware our room wasn’t as nice as some of the others (but I guess we probably paid less!). I can’t wait to stay again!
I really liked the fact that it is a small hotel with a very caribbean feelling, no luxuries but clean enough.
The location was perfect as it is located outside Puerto Viejo but just 15 min away (walking distance) from the main center where all the bars, restaurants and cafes are located.
If you are expecting luxury this is not the hotel for you. It is a very rural hotel but with a very clean, safe and relaxing atmosphere.
The accommodations themselves were well appointed and rustic but not fancy by any stretch. Greatest selling point to this place was the location! It was absolutely perfect for a quick beach getaway. No TV and limited cell phone reception, perfect place to disconnect. Brach was only a few yards away (not beach front) and the town of Puerto Viejo was perfect and quaint.
for 3 nights we did stay in the only cottage with air conditioning (Deluxe Bungalow), which is highly recommended even though a little more expensive. The bungalow was spacies, with a large terrace facing the pure nature and only a short walk to the almost private beautiful beach. We would stay there again. One of our best hotel experiences during our round trip.
The place was very clean, near to the center just a short walking distance to the beach and restaurants. The staff were very polite and friendly. When my friend and I arrived to the hotel the room A/C was not working well but the girl that was in reception noticed it and fixed it inmediately also she gave us two drinks for the issue.
The poeple of the hotel are very friendly, welcoming and help you with everything! The hotel is very new and the architecture is just beautiful. The breakfast and the dinner we had was really great and diverse. The hotel is located directly at the beach, so the location is one of the best things. We also saw a sloth and a tucan there!
The hostel is nice. Our room was basic but really clean and the location was perfect being in the town near all the restaurants but only a fairly short bike ride away from the beaches. The pool was really nice to have and I believe that in comparison to other accommodation in Puerto Viejo that it’s very good value for what you get.
Pleasant easygoing owner Ms Mariam, we had to leave before daybreak and our car was blocked in the tight hotel parking, Mariam solved the situation for us sometime past midnight. Excellently situated, direct beach access, rocky, no easy swimming though. Barely two minutes walk to vivid Puerto Viejo bars and restos.
- Very nice setting in the rainforest with beautiful pathways on the hotel compound
- Teepees/bungalows are designed in a traditional and still somewhat modern way, which all fits well into the surroundings
- Beautiful Chiquita beach is within short walking distance of the hotel
- Delicious restaurants nearby
This was our first trip to Puerto Viejo and Cariblue exceeded our expectations! The resort is beautiful and the location is perfect. The staff was friendly and helpful. We loved the pool, food and the beach which is an easy walk.
If you have the option to add the breakfast, do it. It's amazing!
Very beautiful little hotel with a small pool area. Rooms are very clean and super comfortable to stay in. Staff is really nice and incredibly helpful. The owners gave us lots of advice on things to do in Puerto Viejo and the area around it.
wonderful little hotel up in the jungle set back from the road/beach. Raphael was super helpful - sending information via WhatsApp and on hand whenever you needed him. best breakfast in Costa Rica!
Stefan & Leon are so lovely. The location is beautiful and we LOVED the Playa Chiquita beach in just 5 minutes walk. It's a bit far from Puerto Viejo but that means you get peace and quiet!
The beach is in front of the rooms which is great. it is very convenient because it is located in Puerto Viejo Downtown and therefore you can walk to the bars, restaurants, stores etc..
Location was great. Short walk to Cocles Beach and nearby restaurants. Also just south of Puerto Viejo if you want to get into a larger town, but in a very private and peaceful setting.
The breakfast is varied and tasteful, the staff quite attentive and helpful. The quality of the hotel seems quite correct and the location is quite strategic near the beach.
Nice hotel in Puerto Viejo. Staff was nice. Facilities as well. Nice internet. Close to the beach, bars and restaurants. I had a big and comfy room with a kitchenette.
